A British national and a Romanian citizen died following a drone attack ascribed to Iran by two countries from the west.
The UK and US are “confident” that Iran is responsible for the attack on MV Mercer Street managed by Israeli-owned Zodiac Maritime which happened on Thursday. The tanker attack deemed to be a lack of compliance with the law could heighten tensions between Iran and the two western countries.
UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab assigned blame on Iran for conducting a “deliberate, targeted” attack which constituted “a clear violation of international law”.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken also backed the UK in blaming Iran for the MV Mercer Street in international waters off Oman on July 29.
Upon review of the available information, we are confident that Iran conducted this attack, which killed two innocent people, using one-way explosive UAVs, a lethal capability it is increasingly employing throughout the region,” Mr. Blinken said.
Labour’s shadow foreign secretary, Lisa Nandy urged the UK Government to emphasize to the incoming Iranian president that “lawless actions will carry costs”. She added: The foreign secretary must now make it a priority to pursue coordinated international efforts to tackle these actions by the Iranian government.”
However, Iran has totally refuted the accusations of the attack made by the west.
Saeed Khatibzadeh, Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson described the allegations as “baseless” and warned: “Whoever sows the wind reaps the whirlwind.”
