Kim Kardashian responded to backlash on social media over her brand-new maternity line from her shapewear brand SKIMS, as some people accused her of implying that pregnant women need to be concerned about the appearance of their bodies.
The reality star took to Instagram on Sunday to explain that the new line was not pressuring pregnant women to hide their natural figures but instead the ‘Maternity Solutionwear’ was meant to support their bodies.
In a lengthy Instagram Story post, Kim wrote: “To anyone who has an issue with maternity solutionwear, and if you haven’t been pregnant before you may not know the struggle of what it’s like carrying all of this extra weight the way I did with millions of strong women.”
The reality star went on to explain: “The belly part doesn’t slim your belly, it’s actually sheer and a thinner layered material compared to the rest of the garment.”
“It provides support to help with the uncomfortable weight being carried in your stomach which affects your lower back – and the compression on the leggings help with pain relief caused by swelling.” – She continued.
As a mother-of-four, Kim Kardashian explained that her new products give “comfort and support that most women need after delivery especially if you are recovering from a cesarean”.
English actress Jameela Jamil responded in an Instagram post addressing pregnancy shapewear. She wrote: “Lot of talk on the internet today about pregnancy shapewear. And each to their own.”
She went on to write: “But from the discourse online I will say: I wish we could just Normalize just focusing on the inside of a pregnant body, not the outside. You don’t need your shape corrected or hidden.”
She added in her post that if she has a baby, she will welcome ‘the stretch marks’ and ‘new curves’ and not ‘rush to try and snap back.’

Lot of talk on the internet today about pregnancy shapewear. And each to their own. But from the discourse online I will say: I wish we could just Normalize just focusing on the inside of a pregnant body, not the outside. You don’t need your shape corrected or hidden. You don’t need an even more awkward obstacle between you and a piss. You just need to try and ride with this miracle and do your best to be as happy/comfortable as is possible within your circumstances. Pregnancy is hard enough, with enough worries already. And if you feel self conscious, you are not the problem, who can blame any of us for feeling bad, our society has failed us immensely, and we as a collective need to put more energy into pushing back against this so we can just let a bitch live! If I ever have a baby I’m welcoming the stretch marks, the new curves and I’m sure as shit not gonna rush to try and snap back, I’m just gonna let my body heal from the Massive event that has occurred inside my body. And look if you’re just doing it for support then great! but for the many I saw saying they need it to look less fat during pregnancy… you look fucking GREAT as you are! ❤️
American model Chrissy Teigen defended Kim Kardashian as she put on a shapewear set and shared a series of videos on her Instagram Story, she started by saying: ”Hi guys, an actual pregnant person here!”
She went on to explain why she loves pregnancy shapewear as it is comfortable for her and is not like regular underwear.
Chrissy reiterated that ‘Maternity Solutionwear’ isn’t meant to hide pregnancy and laughed at the idea that pregnant women would think the garments would make them look ‘smaller.’
Besides the one-piece set, Kim Kardashian is also advertising the look with separate bras and full-length leggings or shorts. Some of the clothing advertised was functional, including the Maternity Nursing Sculpting Bra with easy-to-open clasps to make it easier to nurse.
The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star first shared the news of her new line on social media of pregnant women in different styles and shades of her product. Her SKIMS Instagram account also shared some closeups of the pregnancy clothing, with models holding their baby bumps.
All of the maternity bodysuits were advertised with ‘non-compressive cores,’ meaning they would not apply pressure on the stomach.
Despite all of this, many social media users wanted to know why pregnant women needed to be sculpting their physiques. Though on the other hand, other women seemed excited about the new line.
It’s worthy to note that users have been commenting on Kim’s past SKIMS-related posts throughout recent months wondering if a maternity line would be released.
Many pregnant women had shown disappointment that they did not have the same options of solutionwear available to them and so Kim Kardashian responded and provided them with what they wanted.
Her brand posted: “SKIMS Maternity Solutionwear™ is here to support and comfortably take you from trimester to trimester. Launching in 5 styles, 9 colors, and in sizes XXS – 5X on Wednesday, September 16 at 9AM PT / 12PM ET.”
