Australian singer Sia adopted two teenage boys and gave them a home to change the circumstances that they were about to face.
Sia, whose real name is Sia Kate Isobelle Furler, gave fans a glimpse into her life as she revealed that she adopted two sons in 2019. Both boys were 18-years-old at the time, which meant they would have aged out of the foster care that they were in.
OzChild Chief Executive Officer, Dr Lisa J Griffiths told Daily Mail Australia that, “Outcomes for children who are evicted from care when they turn 18 are not good. Studies show that 50% of state care leavers will be unemployed, in jail, homeless, or become a new parent within 12 months.”
“Mental health deteriorates considerably at the point of leaving care, leaving many with feelings of anxiety, depression, and isolation,” Dr Griffiths added. So Sia may have saved these two boys from a disadvantaged life.
Speaking to Kyle and Jackie O on their radio breakfast show, the Australian singer Sia mentions that her ‘newly rich’ status has been able to help her help others.
“It means that I can make a lot of people’s dreams come true, which is the best feeling ever, especially now I don’t drink or do drugs, so that’s the new high,” Sia said.
Such as providing a home for the two teenage boys she has adopted who had ‘extremely traumatic lives’ before.
“I am really obsessed with attachment theory – which is a style of psychology I’ve been learning and studying. I just decided that I could probably help with attachment repair because it’s what I’ve been doing for the past five years and learning about,” Sia told the radio duo.
It is reported that Sia first announced she had adopted her two sons during a video interview with SiriusXM. You can watch part of the interview here –
“I actually adopted two sons last year. They were 18, they’re both 19-years-old now. They were ageing out of the foster care system and yeah, I love them,” Sia explained.
Sia admits that being quarantined during the worldwide pandemic has been a struggle for the two sons, but they are trying.
“They are both finding it pretty difficult, one more so than the other,” Sia said. “But they’re both doing things that are like really good for them right now. That is really helpful. They’re really doing a lot of educational stuff that’s good for them.”
Sia is currently spending time isolating with her new family in her Los Angeles home. Nothing more has been revealed about the boys’ names or any further information about who they are.
