After becoming the first elected female MP in the UK, Dianne Abbott had to endure a ‘barrage of hostility’ that followed.
In an “honest and moving book” Abbott has signed to share her experiences from childhood to becoming the first elected Black female MP in the UK. Her tireless efforts to represent her race in politics continuously inspire many generations.
Abbott, “a titan” of British public and political life, Alpana Sajip, who acquired the book for Viking describes the inspiring woman. “She has inspired generations of Britons through her unwavering efforts, and we know that by sharing her story with the world, she will continue to do so,” said Sajip.
In the book, Abbott writes her life story revealing how a “bespectacled little girl” ended up as a prominent political figure. She said the deal was “a long-awaited chance to tell my own story, in my own words.
“My parents were part of the Windrush generation. Nobody could have guessed that their bespectacled little girl would grow up to be a British Member of Parliament,” she added. “This will be the story of that journey.”
Last September Abbott authorised biography about her life by Robin Bunce and Samara Linton, published by Biteback.
Marking the anniversary of Abbott’s election to parliament, Penguin imprint Viking will publish A Woman Like Me in summer 2022.
