Facebook is blocking all event in an effort to make it impossible for its users to organize violence ahead of Joe Biden’s inauguration next week. The social network app says it’s going to block all events anywhere close to Washington D.C. and state capitals until the inauguration is over.
“We are blocking the creation of any new Facebook events happening in close proximity to locations including the White House, the US Capitol building and any of the state capitol buildings through Inauguration Day.
“Our operations centre is also conducting a secondary review of all Facebook events related to the inauguration and removing ones that violate our policies,” Facebook said.
The Facebook decision follows increased anxiety around the January 20th event. The FBI has also warned of the possibility of violence at state capitals and in Washington D.C.
Facebook previously hinted that it’s planning for the inauguration had taken on “new urgency” following the violent mob attack in the Capitol building last week.
The social media giant has since faced scrutiny about its role in facilitating the “Stop the Steal” movement.
