Nurse Charged With Murder Following An Increase In Baby Deaths

The increase in the number of infants dying at the Countess of Chester Hospital has prompted the police to conduct an investigation.

A 30-year-old nurse has been arrested for the third time in connection with the baby deaths. Lucy Letby has been charged with eight counts of murder and ten counts of attempted murder.

In a statement, Chester Police said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised Cheshire Police to charge a healthcare professional with murder in connection with an ongoing investigation into a number of baby deaths at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

“Lucy Letby, of Arran Avenue, Hereford, is facing eight charges of murder and 10 charges of attempted murder. The charges relate to the period of June 2015 to June 2016”.

She was detained again on Tuesday, 10 November, and was charged at a subsequent time. The nurse has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Warrington Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 12 November.

Ms Letby was detained by police in 2018 and 2019 but was released on bail pending further investigations.

Officers confirmed that they have kept the parents with the babies involved informed about developments and given them the support they need.
