A number of transgender patients in the UK have turned to crowdfund due to the huge delays on the state-run National Health Service.
The transitioning process could take a couple of years for a transgender patient to transition under Britain`s state-run National Health Service. Shattered to learn about the long process, a teenager is now raising funds online for surgery.
As he was growing up, Jay began to notice some changes to his increasingly feminine body which did not conform with the identity he was developing into.
The 19-year-old began to research what it means to be transgender and how other trans individuals transformed their bodies to reflect who they really were. After he found that transitioning could take forever on the state-run National Health Service, animation student from south-west England turned to crowdfund.
A private surgeon would charge at least £5,000 for the surgery that will transform Jay`s body to reflect his true self. Speaking to AFP, Jay said: “With the waiting list, it just gets to a point where it’s unbearable… It’s just really difficult.
Thousands of transgender patients in the UK have not yet transformed their bodies due to the lengthy delays on the state-run National Health Service. According to 2018 data, approximately 200,000 to 50,000 transgender people live in the UK, and about 13,500 of them are on NHS waiting lists.
A vocal advocate for transgender and LGBTQ healthcare, NHS doctor Adrian Harrop said the waiting list was now growing “exponentially” every month, calling it “inhumane”.
Transgender individuals are “significantly more likely” to have been crime victims compared to cisgender people, whose gender identity conforms with the sex they were assigned at birth.
