Amazon Studios has picked up a scripted series starring Nicolas Cage as the infamous Joe Exotic, which has become a popular name since the Netflix docuseries ‘Tiger King’.
Nicolas Cage was attached to star in the series back in May when the project was set by CBS Television Studios and Imagine Entertainment, and now Amazon Studios has also come aboard to produce the series.
The Amazon Studios series is based on the Texas Monthly article ‘Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild,’ by Leif Reigstad. With the story focusing on Joe Shreibvogel and how he transformed himself into Joe Exotic, an outlandish exotic zookeeper in Oklahoma who is trying to keep his park alive, even at the risk of losing his sanity.
Dan Lagana will be the writer, showrunner, and executive producer of the scripted series, under his overall deal with CBS Television Studios.
Joe Exotic is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence on 17 federal charges of animal abuse and two charges of murder-for-hire, for hiring a hitman to kill Baskin. He continues to make headlines, most recently for his pardon request letter to President Donald Trump.
Carol Baskin, who has recently been named as one of the new ‘Dancing With the Stars‘ cast members, reacted negatively to the news of Nicolas Cage playing her real-life rival.
Carol Baskin said in a new interview with Extra: “He is such a favorite actor of mine, and I just don’t know if I can even watch him after seeing that role.”
Nicolas Cage’s project is one of two scripted series based on the Schreibvogel story that are currently in the works. Kate McKinnon is set to play Carol Baskin in a drama that’s been ordered to series as a cross-platform venture on NBC, USA Network, and streamer Peacock. That show will be based on Wondery’s ‘Joe Exotic’ podcast.
